FAQ

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only FDA-recognized method of permanent hair removal. It has been safely practiced for over 130 years and works by treating each hair follicle individually using a fine, sterile, disposable probe and electrical current. When performed correctly and consistently, the treated follicle is permanently disabled and can no longer produce hair.

Why choose electrolysis?

Electrolysis is ideal if you are seeking a permanent solution to unwanted hair. Unlike temporary methods such as shaving, waxing, tweezing, threading, or depilatory creams, electrolysis offers lasting results with an endpoint. Clients often choose electrolysis to:
  • Eliminate ongoing hair-removal routines
  • Improve skin condition and reduce irritation
  • Feel more confident and at ease in their body
  • Address hormonally influenced hair growth
Electrolysis is recognized by both the FDA and the American Medical Association as the only permanent method of hair removal.

How does electrolysis work?

A sterile, disposable probe is gently inserted into the hair follicle alongside the hair shaft. You do not feel the insertion. A controlled electrical current is then applied to disable the follicle’s ability to regenerate hair. The treated hair is removed smoothly without resistance. Different electrolysis modalities may be used depending on the hair and skin:
  • Thermolysis (heat-based)
  • Galvanic (chemical-based)
  • Blend (a combination of both)
Your treatment is customized to your unique hair, skin, and comfort level.

Why does hair grow in cycles?

Hair grows in cycles, and electrolysis is most effective when hairs are treated during the active growth phase (Anagen). Because not all hairs are in the same phase at the same time, multiple treatments are necessary to catch hairs as they cycle into growth. Some regrowth between appointments is normal and expected. With consistency, hairs become finer, weaker, and easier to permanently remove.

How long does it take to become hair-free?

This varies from person to person. It is a gradual process, not a one-time treatment. With consistency, most clients begin to notice visible improvement within the first few months. Hair grows finer, slower and less dense, From there, we continue building on that progress with consistent treatments, working toward long-term smoothness over time. Factors that influence treatment time include:
  • Area being treated
  • Hair density, texture, and growth pattern
  • Hormones and genetics
  • Previous hair-removal methods
  • Consistency of appointments
Improvement is typically noticed within the first few months when appointments are kept regularly.

Am I a good candidate for electrolysis?

Most people are excellent candidates. Electrolysis works on all skin tones, hair colors, and hair textures. Clients range from young adults to seniors. Electrolysis may not be recommended for certain medical conditions or medications, in which case medical clearance may be required. This will be discussed during your consultation.

Why do I have unwanted hair?

Unwanted hair growth can be influenced by many factors, including:
  • Hormonal changes (puberty, pregnancy, menopause, PCOS)
  • Genetics
  • Medications
  • Stress or physiological changes
  • Repeated use of temporary hair-removal methods
You are not alone, and you are not unusual. Unwanted hair is a common and deeply personal concern, and you will be treated with respect and care throughout the process.

Does electrolysis hurt?

Electrolysis involves sensation, but most clients find it very manageable. Sensations are often described as brief warmth, tingling, or a quick snap. Comfort varies by area, day, and individual sensitivity. Your treatment is always performed within your tolerance level, and comfort-support options are discussed during your consultation

How long are appointments?

Appointment length is determined during your consultation and depends on the area being treated, hair density, and your comfort level. Most initial appointments range from 30 to 90 minutes. As progress is made, appointments often become shorter and less frequent.

Can I remove hair between appointments?

Yes. You may shave, clip, bleach, or use a depilatory cream between visits. These methods remove hair at the surface and do not interfere with progress. Please avoid tweezing, waxing, threading, sugaring, or laser treatments, as these methods disrupt the follicle and can stimulate additional growth.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

Please refer to the Pre-Care Instructions page for detailed guidance.

How do I care for my skin after treatment?

Please refer to the Post-Care Instructions page for detailed guidance.

What equipment do you use?

Juicy Roots Electrolysis and Skin Care uses the Apilus Platinum Pure, a state-of-the-art epilator known for precision, customization, and comfort. This advanced technology allows treatments to be tailored specifically to your hair, skin, and sensitivity level.

Are there side effects?

Temporary redness, swelling, or sensitivity is common and typically resolves within hours to a few days. Proper aftercare is essential and will be reviewed with you. Ice packs and calming treatments are provided when appropriate.

Is electrolysis safe?

Yes. Electrolysis has a long history of safety when performed correctly. All treatments follow California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology sanitation and sterilization standards. Sterile, disposable probes are used for every treatment, and all equipment is properly sanitized.

Can I receive electrolysis during pregnancy?

Electrolysis may be performed during pregnancy with medical approval. Treatment is typically postponed until after the first trimester, and only specific techniques are used. Please discuss this during your consultation.

Can electrolysis be done on beauty marks?

“For safety reasons, some raised beauty marks or pigmented areas may need dermatologist approval before treatment.”

Is electrolysis expensive?

Electrolysis is an investment, not a quick fix. While temporary hair-removal methods may seem less expensive upfront, many clients find they spend significantly more over time without permanent results. Electrolysis is charged by time, not by body part. During your consultation, we will discuss a realistic treatment plan and estimated frequency based on your goals.

What about laser hair removal?

Laser is classified as permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal. It is most effective on light skin with dark, coarse hair and is not suitable for all hair types or skin tones. Electrolysis treats each follicle individually and works on all hair colors, textures, and skin tones, making it the only truly permanent solution.
